Call: Youth Art Exhibition

Calling southern Gulf Island youth, ages 13 – 18 to create and submit art works for a youth exhibition to take place concurrent with the Salt Spring National Art Prize 2019.

The Exhibition will be hosted by the Salt Spring Gallery, October 4 – 23, 2019.

2-d (Max: 2x3ft) or 3-d (Max. 3x4x2ft) works must be created after January 1, 2018 by youth residents of the Southern Gulf Islands. More details to follow. Submissions will open later this year.

EAS19: Production Assistant

Under the direction of the EAS Committee, the Production Assistant supports the planning and delivery of community events during the Easter Art Show (EAS), April 19 – 28, 2019.

During EAS Mahon Hall host 2 exhibits – the Main Gallery features the group show Homage, curated by Patrick McCallum; and the Annex Gallery features a youth exhibit. The anchor exhibit Homage provides inspiration for many public events over the 10 days: free workshops, Noon Hour Art Talks, evening events, the opening reception, and visits by schools.

Remuneration for this position is based on a $1000 honorarium.

Duties include:

Prior to EAS:

  • Confirm speakers and dates for Noon Hour Art Talks: collect promotional details
  • Distribution of promotional materials: posters and programs across SSI
  • Attend EAS planning meetings as needed; Be knowledgeable on EAS events and exhibits
  • Manage online volunteer registration and ensure Gallery shifts are filled
  • Assist with other aspects of event and exhibit planning as needed

During EAS:

  • Assist with venue set Up / tear down for daytime & evening events, before / after exhibition
  • Ensure smooth gallery transitions between events: moving exhibition displays, assist with event bar, set up of chairs, tables, hospitality, etc
  • Welcome visitors at the door during events, collecting donations, etc; Liaising with the public
  • Oversee volunteer scheduling and shift changes
  • Liaise with Artists, speakers and workshop leaders to ensure their production needs are met
  • Other duties as may be required

Candidate Assets:

  • Physical ability required for moving exhibit infrastructure, chairs, etc.

EAS19 Artistic Directors

Easter Art Show 2019: Homage

The 2019 Easter Art Show takes place April 19 – 28. We are very excited to welcome Patrick McCallum as this year’s Guest Curator. Patrick has invited 40 diverse artists from the Southern Gulf Islands to be part of the EAS19 exhibition: Homage. Artists create 2 and 3 -dimensional tributes to artists that have informed their work, their greatest artistic influences in any creative media, be they painters, sculptors, musicians, composers, choreographers, writers or poets.

We are seeking proposals from individuals with an interest in programming an event as part of Easter Art Show 2019.

  • Events must relate to, or be inspired by the EAS19 exhibit theme of ‘Homage’.
  • Events may feature one or multiple genres of performance or literary arts. For example, an event could showcase just dance, or could include poetry, theatre and music.
  • Events will take place at Mahon Hall between April 19 – 28.

Submit your proposals to admin@ssartscouncil.com before January 18, 2019. Describe your proposed event, what artists/performers would be included, and list technical/venue requirements. Proposals will be reviewed by the EAS Committee for suitability and feasibility. We are able to offer small honorariums for Artistic Directors and performers however, we can only program a limited number of events, so early submissions are strongly encouraged.

Grants + Awards: Fall 2018 Submissions

Individual or Group Projects

Objectives: To assist individuals and groups to undertake projects of cultural benefit to the community. Average Grant Levels: $300 – $800

Description:  This program fosters innovation, creativity and experimentation in the arts and sharing those experiences with members of the larger Salt Spring Island community. With limited funding, the funding program is not able to support annually recurring events. Rather it seeks to catalyze new artistic approaches and collaborations and facilitate the public performance and exhibits of those initiatives. While not a condition of eligibility, applicants are encouraged to use Mahon Hall as the venue for public exhibits and performances.

Professional Development Grants

Next Deadline: October 31, 2018

Objectives: Funding contributes towards the cost of short-term courses or workshops offered by off island or on island by instructors from off-island.

Description: Professional Development education must provide an opportunity for artistic enrichment and growth. Applicants must practise and/or teach in their arts discipline, have been Salt Spring Island residents for three or more years and be members of the Arts Council.

In House Proposals 2019

Welcome to the online proposal submission for “In House” workshops. Deadline for submissions for 2019 workshops is September 30th, 2018.

Workshops on the Rock is accepting workshop proposals for our 2019 season in Fine Art, Fine Craft, Dance, Writing, Drama, Music and the Creative Process for youth and adults. Our mandate is to offer workshops of a high quality with content that is current, original and engaging for participants of all ages.

Workshop format
For 2019 we are looking to offer half or whole one day workshops on Saturdays.  We encourage your application to focus on short, content rich workshops that accommodate registrants busy schedules by taking place in one day. Please indicate what Saturdays during Jan/Feb/March you are available.

“In House” workshops take place at Mahon Hall in Jan/Feb/March and are focused on but not exclusive to Youth ages 5 and up. Anyone may submit a proposal for a one time or series of workshops. All administration and registration for “In House” workshops is done by WOR and the SSAC.

Overview of the Position:
The Salt Spring Arts Council (SSAC) celebrates 50 years of promoting and celebrating the arts in our vibrant community. SSAC serves our Salt Spring Island community by offering a wide array of arts programs. We operate historic Mahon Memorial Hall in the heart of Ganges village – the Hall is home to our gallery, programs and offices. The Exhibitions Assistant will gain experience working in a dynamic arts service organization by supporting the operations of the Artcraft Exhibit which opens mid-June and runs throughout the summer. Artcraft consists of numerous exhibits including the rotating Summer Showcases on the Stage, the outdoor exhibit Art on the Hall, and the retail gallery showcasing locally made fine art and craft. The Assistant will support the multi-faceted exhibit operations including set-up, inventory, promotions and design, retail and customer support, and liasing with community and with artists. The Assistant will also work to update exhibition and artist details on the SSAC website and newsletter.

 

Responsibilities:

Under the direction of the Artcraft Manager and the Executive Administrator:

  • Support the delivery of special events for Artcraft’s 50th Anniversary
  • Assist with annual Gallery set-up and artwork delivery
  • Assist with Artcraft Showcase Exhibitions, hanging and receptions

The WOR Assistant will support operations support the delivery of three kids Summer Art Camps. The successful candidate with manage Camp registrations, assist with program promotions, maintain art supplies and camp materials, and assist the Camp instructor in all aspects of educational delivery, supervision, set up and clean up.

Call for Curators: Easter Art Show 2019

INTRODUCTION

Since 2007, the Salt Spring Arts Council has presented the Easter Art Show (formerly Tour). Each year Mahon Hall has a curated anchor exhibit of fine arts (photography, painting, sculpture) by artists from the Southern Gulf Islands (School District 64 boundaries). Past exhibits have included single artist surveys, duos, group and themed shows.

During the 10-day event Mahon Hall also hosts a variety of public events showcasing the fine and performing arts. Events include performances, artist talks, films, works by youth, and workshops. All the events are complimentary to the theme or parameters of each year’s exhibition. The Easter Art Show Committee oversees the planning and production of each year’s event, with specific components of the 10-day event directed by members of our artistic community.

The Easter Art Show seeks to:

  • Promote artists and the arts in our community;
  • Create opportunities for the public to explore the work of, and engage with, local artists;
  • Support the development of curatorial expertise in our community;
  • Ignite integration and collaboration amongst artistic disciplines.

 

CALL FOR PROPOSALS

The Salt Spring Arts Council is inviting members of the community to submit proposals for the 2019 Easter Art Show. The invited curator will work with the EAS Committee to direct all aspects of the 2019 fine arts exhibit. Preference will be given to Curators based in School District 64 boundaries.

Deadline for 2019 Submissions: Friday, June 15, 2018

(Please note, the committee may consider suitable applications for Easter Art Show 2020 for exhibitions that may require a longer lead time.)

Honourarium: $1000 – $2000 (project dependent)
