Vessels – Drawing on an Idea
Instructor – Gillian McConnell
Friday October 7th – 10-4pm, Ages 11 and up @ Mahon Hall – 12 students.
In this fun, one day workshop, we will create a series of drawings exploring the vessel as an object, a vehicle and a symbol. Consider the vessel as container, carrier, connector—of things, people, communities, ideas and life itself.
You will have the opportunity to try out a variety of media, substrates and drawing techniques and use 100 year-old charcoal recovered from Isaburo Tasaka’s pit kilns, which were restored last year in Mouat Park, Ganges, Salt Spring Island
Joy of Texture : Creating a Hand Built Mug
Instructor – LeeAnn Norgard
Saturday October 8, 12 – 3pm, Ages 7 – 10 @ Mahon Hall – 10 students
This workshop is centered around the process of playing with clay, and exploration. In this workshop, students will be given a large, rolled slab of clay and various texture tools with which to explore. With some basic building and joining skills, the students will piece together their creations into a functional mug. Students will select the glaze of their choice, and the pottery will be fired and ready in 2 weeks for them to pick up.

The goal of Workshops on the Rock is to promote and create educational opportunities in the community. Each Spring, we publish and distribute a brochure with an exciting array of arts-based ‘At Large‘ workshops facilitated by artists and instructors in studios throughout Salt Spring Island. The brochure is distributed widely throughout the region.
We also offer ‘In House‘ workshops that take place in historic Mahon Hall in the heart of Ganges. Workshops vary from one-time to 4 or 6 week sessions. Many of these workshops are geared to children and youth, and others are provide professional development for artists.
