The steps sit amongst the trees behind Mahon hall, hovering about 10 feet above ground. My material selection presents something playful. I enjoy making spaces for myself either in paintings or sculptures, in which I can expand. This place in the trees the stairs lead to, allow a different view of the hall. The stairs will reflect and appreciate the shapes and sensibilities of the hall and invite us to look.
Stefanie Denz, MFA University of Auckland (1989), is interested in body language and spatial relationships. She developed her painting during the sensibilities of the eighties and also felt the pull of sculptors Chris Simonds(b.1944) and earlier sculptures of Alice Aycock(b.1945). Filmography later became an ongoing interest. Stefanie has received numerous awards; Canada Council, 1999 & 2003, BC Arts Council collaborative grant 2010, and has exhibited and is in private collections in New Zealand, Germany, USA and Canada. Most recently she attended Transart Institute (MFA and PHD conferring) summer residency, 2014 in Berlin. Stefanie lives on Saltspring Island BC, where she teaches drawing and painting and is involved in community arts. Her work can be seen at Winchester Galleries, Victoria, Pod Gallery, Saltspring Is., and in her studio.
