Arts Education is a vital component of of the Arts Council’s initiatives to broaden opportunities for enjoyment of, and participation in, cultural activities on Salt Spring Island.

bob_leatherbarrow_ppEducational programs run by the Arts Council include the long-running and successful Artist in the Class workshops for schools in the district. In 2011, the Arts in the Community program, now Workshops on the Rock was added to offer arts workshops to adults in the community and island visitors.

The Council also supports Arts Education through its Grants & Awards program. Local arts practitioners can apply for financial support to further their Professional Development skills. Individuals and Groups can obtain Grants to help them stage cultural events for community benefit. High School students can access financial support to help them pursue arts education at a tertiary level.

The Arts Council is responding to community interest in and support for the development of a permanent Centre/School for the Arts on Salt Spring Island. A Steering Committee was created in 2011 to research the possibilities, consult with the community and propose a suitable model for an arts education facility on the island. The work to realise this ambitious, yet important goal is ongoing.
