Artist in the Class 2017-01-18T10:11:36+00:00

Each school year the Salt Spring Arts Council enriches the lives of Salt Spring Island students by placing literary, performing and visual artists and artisans in classrooms throughout School District #64.

ArtistinclassThe Council sponsors this program in partnership with the Capital Regional District. More than 30 artists’ workshops are listed in the annual Catalogue, which is supplied to all schools in the district. Teachers select those artists whose offerings best meet the interests and age range of their students.

Workshops range from instruction in clay, printmaking, textiles, and painting through music, dance, journal writing, storytelling, video and music production, poetry and lantern making.

The artists, who must be Salt Spring Island residents, are eligible for funding to participate in the program, which is designed to heighten awareness of arts in the community. Interested artists submit applications in July for the following year’s program. The Artist in the Class Committee reviews submissions for inclusion in the catalogue. Teachers then contact the artists directly to plan for class workshops they have selected.
